Kawehi Sablan's 46-yard interception return for a touchdown with three minutes, 34 seconds left rallied Castle past Kaimuki, 19-14, last night at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

It was the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East season opener for both squads. But it looked as if both could have used another week of nonleague play. The teams combined for 28 penalties totaling 263 yards. Each had 14 penalties with Castle's totaling 161 yards.

"I don't even want to talk about the penalties," Kaimuki coach Darren Johnson said.

"We're not as disciplined as we'd like to be," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said. "Our lack of discipline hurt us. It gave them opportunities to score. That's something we need to work on."

The Knights (2-0 overall, 1-0 East) trailed 12-0 at the half with a fumble leading the Bulldogs' first TD. But a blocked punt in the third quarter helped Castle get on the board to pull to 12-6 at 4:18 in the third quarter and a leaping interception by Shaydon Kehano was recycled for a TD pass that put Castle ahead, 13-12, after Derek Hillegass' PAT with 11:52 left in the game.

But a roughing the punter penalty later in the quarter gave Kaimuki a new set of downs. Although it had to punt again, this time the Knights were pinned at their 1. That's when Desmond Tautofi and Laau Kent-Visesio dropped running back Garrett Paredes in the end zone for a safety with 4:29 left in the game to give Kaimuki a 14-12 lead.

The Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1) received the ensuing free kick at their 45. But on third-and-7 from the Kaimuki 48, Sablan cut in front of a Bulldogs' receiver and had nothing but open field in front of him for a 46-yard interception return for a TD. Two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against Castle on the play for excessive celebration set it back to the Bulldogs' 32 for the PAT; the pass play failed.

"I saw the out (pattern) going and saw the (receiver) coming it, so I broke on the ball," Sablan said.

Kaimuki failed to move the ball on its next series, losing the ball on downs at its 18 with 2:22 left. Castle was able to run out the clock from there.

Bulldogs' dimunitive running back Justin Paderes sustained an ankle injury and was carried off the field with 6:59 left in the game and never returned. The Knights contained him to just 24 yards on 16 carries. His 4-yard TD run in the first quarter gave Kaimuki a 6-0 lead.

The Bulldogs scored with no time showing on the clock to end the first half when wide receiver Tautofi took a lateral pass from quarterback Nainoa Hiapo and threw a 24-yard TD pass to Chris Fiamate to make it 12-0.

The Knights chipped the deficit on a 7-yard option keeper by quarterback Jaysen Ferreira. Maeda said he is their "running" quarterback, as opposed to starter Rapozo, who is the passer. Ferreira faked a dive and went wide left into the end zone to make it 12-6.

Rapozo got in to the act with his 12-yard TD pass to Shaydon Kehano with 11:52 left in the game with Hillegass' PAT giving the Knights a 13-12 lead.

"We played a good first half, but we made some critical mistakes in the second half," Johnson said.

Both defenses kept the other's offense in check. Rapozo passed for just 65 yards for Castle and Hiapo 52 for Kaimuki.

"Our defense hung in there and persevered and made opportunities for our team to win," Maeda said.
