BEIJING — Christel Simms, a Punahou School senior swimming for the Philippines, had a personal best in the women's 100-meter freestyle yesterday, but did not advance to the semifinals.

Simms, just the seventh woman from the Philippines to swim in the Olympics, finished fourth in her heat in 56.67 seconds. Her previous best was 57.17.

Simms will swim in the 50-meter freestyle qualifying heats tomorrow.

SCHLANGER ON RELAY TEAM

BEIJING — Former University of Hawai'i swimmer, Melanie Schlanger, swam the third leg of the women's 800-meter freestyle relay yesterday as the Australians finished third in their qualifying heat in 7:55.10. Schlanger was not part of the relay team that swam in today's final and the gold in a world-record time of 7 minutes, 44.31 seconds.

WATER POLO

U.S. MEN FALL TO SERBIA

BEIJING — Serbia scored twice in the second and third periods to remain unbeaten in pool B with a 4-2 victory over the United States today in men's water polo.

Serbia is 3-0 while the Americans dip to 2-1.

Punahou graduate Brandon Brooks, a goalkeeper, did not see any action for the U.S.

VAN BELKUM SCORES 2

BEIJING — Behind two goals from former University of Hawai'i water polo player Iefke Van Belkum, the Netherlands (1-1) beat Greece (2-2), 9-6, yesterday in a women's water polo preliminary match.

Meike De Nooy, who will return to Manoa this year, did not play in goal for the Netherlands.

SOFTBALL

AUSTRALIA TOPS CHINA

BEIJING — Australia (1-2) bounced back from a defeat to the U.S. with a 3-1 win over China (2-1) today in women's softball.

Stacey Porter, a former University of Hawai'i player, went 0 for 2 for Australia.

Justine Smethurst, a pitcher who plans to return to Manoa and play for UH, did not pitch for Australia.
