Sustainable Living Expo this weekend at MCC

The state's food and energy dependence will be the focus of the Maui Island Sustainable Living Expo to be held Saturday and Sunday at Maui Community College.

Michael Hamnett, executive director of the University of Hawai'i Research Corp., will give the keynote address on "The Challenge of Sustainability for an Island Society in a Global Environment."

State Sen. Russell Kokubun, chairman of the Hawai'i 2050 Sustainability Taskforce, will deliver the closing address, focusing on food and energy security.

The expo also features panel discussions on such topics as agricultural tourism, community-supported agriculture, Maui's emerging "green economy" and sustainable living in connection with Native Hawaiian culture.

The two-day conference fee is $55 in advance or $60 at the door; the one-day fee is $40 in advance or $45 at the door. Discounts are offered to teachers and students. A Saturday night event with food, exhibits and entertainment is free.
