Pearl City wins Seniors World Series opener, 5-3

Sheldon Milan allowed one hit over 6 1/3 innings as Pearl City defeated Makati City, Philippines, 5-3, on the opening day of the Little League Seniors (ages 15-16) World Series yesterday at Bangor, Maine.
Pearl City, the U.S. West champion, scored three runs in the fifth for a 4-1 lead.
Shayne Nakata recorded the final two outs for Pearl City.
Kahana Neal and Milan each batted 2 for 4, and Reid Ramos scored two runs against Makati City, the Asia-Pacific champion.
Pearl City will face U.S. South champion Boynton Beach, Fla., today at 2 p.m. Hawai'i time.
HILO FALLS TO TEXAS, 7-5
Alvin, Texas scored four runs in the fifth inning to topple Hilo, 7-5, yesterday on the first day of the Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) World Series at Taylor, Mich.
Hilo, the U.S. West champion, led 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth.
Taylor Reed had a two-run double for a 6-4 lead in the fifth for Alvin, the U.S. Southwest champion. Trey Williams pitched a complete game.
Taylor Goo had two RBIs and Ridge Hoopii-Halsem batted 2 for 4 with a double for Hilo.
Hilo will face U.S. South champion Mechanicsville, Va., today at 5 a.m. Hawai'i time.
PADDLING
KAILUA WINS CHALLENGE
Kailua Canoe Club won the Kaena Challenge long-distance canoe race yesterday.
Kailua completed the 21-mile course from Sunset Beach to Yokohama Bay in 2 hours, 22 minutes, 54 seconds. Members of the winning crew were Christopher Tseu, Chris Tanaka, Donovan Leandro, C.J. Day, Keola Lindsey, Heath Hemmings, Nick Ho, Kekama Akana and Joel Long.
Outrigger finished second in 2:25:02, while Lokahi was the first women's crew to finish in 3:21:30.
It was the opening race of the long-distance season for outrigger canoe paddlers. However, some of the top crews did not enter, including Lanikai's men, and the women of Hui Lanakila and Waikiki Beach Boys.
GOLF
MURPHY'S TEAM WINS
PGA Professional Steven Murphy teamed with Dana Palama, Keith Yamamoto and Rory Rayno, representing Princeville Prince Course, to post a 13-under-par 131 and win the Aloha Section Team Championship yesterday and a berth in the 2008 PGA McGladrey National Team Championship at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course.
The Princeville Prince team won by two strokes and will compete against 40 other teams Oct. 20 to 22, in the National Championship at Pinehurst, N.C.
The total combined professional and amateur purse was $17,200, of which a $750 Pinehurst Resort gift card was presented to each player on the winning team. The winning pro earned $1,750.
The Turtle Bay Golf team of Kevin Carll and amateurs Allan Kuaana, Fred Denault and Paul Ichimura finished runner-up at 133.
