Waipi'o makes final of Majors West Regional

Caleb Duhay allowed one hit over 5 2/3 innings and Jedd Andrade drove in three runs as Waipi'o defeated Pleasanton, Calif., 8-0, yesterday in the semifinals of the Little League Majors (ages 11-12) Western Regional at San Bernardino, Calif.
Waipi'o, the No. 2 seed, will face top seed Las Vegas in the final tomorrow at 4 p.m. Hawai'i time. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
"Obviously the West region is tough, so to be one of the last two teams it is very gradifying," said Waipi'o coach Timo Donahue.
Duhay allowed just one single, walked two and struck out 11. Tanner Tokunaga retired the only batter he faced.
Andrade hit a single and double, and Tokunaga belted a two-run homer for Waipi'o (4-1). Keelen Obedoza and Kainoa Fong each scored two runs.
Waipi'o beat the Northern California representative twice in the tournament.
Las Vegas (5-0) defeated Glendale, Ariz., 14-8, in last night's other semifinal.
Las Vegas beat Waipi'o, 4-1, on Tuesday.

UH'S HOUSTON HONORED
University of Hawai'i women's volleyball player Jamie Houston was named the preseason Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year yesterday.
Houston, last year's WAC Player of the Year, was second in the nation with 5.51 kills per game last season. The senior is a three-time all-WAC honoree.
This is the fourth straight year that a Hawai'i player has earned the preseason honor.
Joining Houston on the preseason team are teammates Aneli Cubi-Otineru and Amber Kaufman.
GOLF
SHAW IS TOP ASSISTANT
Kapalua Bay's John Shaw won the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Championship yesterday. The $6,000 Aloha Section PGA event was played at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Shaw closed with a 4-under-par 68 in winds that gusted up to 35 mph. His two-day total of 142 was three shots better than Princeville's Tom Freestone (75) and Pearl's Regan Lee (72).
Freestone and Lee had to playoff for the second qualifying spot to advance to the national championship. Freestone sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to win.
Kyle Trenholm of Ko Olina finished fourth at 70-150.
The TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant national championship is Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
CHING WINS ARMY BY 9
Alex Ching fired a final-round 68 yesterday to win the Army Invitational by nine strokes at Leilehua Golf Course.
Ching's two-round total was 134. Spencer Shishido was second at 143 and Henry Park third at 144.
Ching, who had a 66 in Thursday's first round, shot the two lowest rounds of the tournament.
Wendell Kop won A flight with a 150.
WHITING TRAILS BY ONE
Waiakea High alum Leah Whiting shot a 3-under-par 69 to trail leaders Lisa Ferrero and Vicky Hurst by a shot after yesterday's first round of the Duramed Futures Fall Auto Group Classic.
The three-round event on the LPGA's developmental tour is being played at Crooked Creek Golf Community in London, Ky.
Whiting, of Hilo, is tied for third with four other golfers. She is in her first season on the Futures Tour.
Shayna Miyajima of Maui shot a 75 and was tied for 53rd. Kailua's Bridget Dwyer was tied for 84th after a 77.
