A 26-year-old Honolulu man was killed early yesterday morning after losing control of his speeding car, which flipped over in the west-bound lanes of H-1 Freeway near the Alexander Street on-ramp in Makiki.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office yesterday identified the man as Stephen Yeh.

Yeh is the 30th traffic fatality of the year compared with 41 during the same period last year.

In another serious wreck later yesterday on the Windward side, nine people were hurt in a 12:45 p.m. collision involving a tour bus and several vehicles on a Likelike Highway off-ramp.

Police said the accident on the Kahekili off-ramp from the Kane'ohe-bound Likelike Highway involved a tour bus and six vehicles.

In the H-1 crash, a 26-year-old man from 'Ewa Beach who was a front-seat passenger in the Camry was taken to the hospital in good condition.

A woman in another vehicle also was sent to the hospital, in good condition, authorities said.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said Yeh lost control of a 2007 Toyota Camry sedan after he swerved to the right to avoid a slower vehicle in the left lane.

The Camry skidded right across all three freeway lanes, struck a "jersey barrier" on the right edge of the freeway and then swerved back across the road, slamming into the center concrete barrier at 1:12 a.m., police said.

The car flipped onto its roof, ejecting Yeh, who was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

It continued to slide on its roof and slammed into the back of a 2003 Mazda B3, dislodging the Mazda's spoiler and sending it through the rear window of the Mazda. A 23-year-old woman in the Mazda's right-rear seat was hit in the head by the spoiler. She was taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital in good condition.

The Mazda driver, a 24-year-old man, and a front-seat passenger, a 23-year-old man, were not injured, police said. They are both from Honolulu.

Police said Yeh was speeding, but they do not know if alcohol or drugs played a part in the wreck.

The Mazda driver was not speeding, and alcohol and drugs also were not an issue with him, police said.

In the Windward accident, Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for Emergency Medical Services, said nine people, eight from the bus and one from one of the vehicles — were taken in stable condition to two area hospitals.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the passengers in the 25-person tour bus were Japanese visitors.

Police, EMS and HFD units were all called to the scene due to the number of vehicles and people involved, said Seelig.

He said the off-ramp was reopened at around 3 p.m.
