CANTON, Ohio — Wearing burgundy instead of green and black, and No. 5 instead of 15, former University of Hawai'i star quarterback Colt Brennan was on target just as Hawai'i fans have become accustomed.
Brennan, operating as the third-team signal-caller for the Washington Redskins, completed 9 of 10 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns, rallying the Skins to a 30-16 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.
"Taking my first snap, I went to the line, took a deep breath and thought to myself, 'Just have fun out here tonight,'" Brennan said. "And I had a lot of fun."
In his only two possessions of the game, Brennan led the Redskins on scoring drives of 74 and 88 yards.
He was especially accurate on key third down plays. Both scoring passes came on third down. He also completed a 34-yard pass on a third-and-7.
"More than his throws, what I was pleased with is how he was looking to the right guy when he was backpedaling," said Washington coach Jim Zorn, a former NFL quarterback. "He knew the plays, knew the routes. He should feel very good about his performance."
Brennan's performance also drew praise from the national TV broadcast team of Al Michaels and color analyst John Madden.
"I like the way he plays," Madden said. "We're standing up here away from him, but you can feel his energy. He brings a certain energy to the game, a certain energy to this team.
"Colt Brennan is a player's type of guy. All players are gonna love him the way he plays."
Said Michaels, a former sportscaster in Hawai'i: "Is there a better name for a quarterback than Colt Brennan?"
With the Redskins trailing 16-9 in the third period, Brennan made his appearance.
He led the Redskins on an eight-play scoring drive culminated with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Mann on third-and-6.
On his next possession, Brennan engineered a 15-play scoring drive to give the Redskins a 23-16 lead. The drive was capped when Brennan scrambled right and threw 5 yards to Marcus Mason on third-and-four.
Brennan, drafted in the sixth-round in April's NFL draft, is trying to secure a spot on the Redskins roster. NFL teams usually carry three quarterbacks.
Starter Jason Campbell and 13-year veteran backup Todd Collins played the first half for the Redskins.
Derek Devine replaced Brennan in the fourth quarter.time-consuming drives, and that kept it close enough for Brennan, the record-breaking quarterback out of Hawai'i, to change the game.
He entered midway through the third quarter, trailing 16-9, and responded with a 20-yard TD pass to Maurice Mann, on his first series. Brennan again got the Redskins in scoring position on the next series, finally scrambling around long enough to find Marcus Mason for a 5-yard TD pass with 10:22 left to make it 23-16.
Richardson sealed it with his interception return.
The game had all the earmarks of the league's opening preseason game — penalties, mistakes, and, yes, a plethora of backups since both teams were short-handed.
Jim Sorgi ran the Colts first-team offense with Manning still recovering from last month's knee surgery. The Colts expect Manning to be ready for the regular season.
After two offensive plays, they also lost Pro Bowl running back Joseph Addai with a head injury. And after the 16-play first series, the Colts went exclusively with subs.
Washington was in even worse shape.
Defensively, they played without all four starting defensive linemen, including new acquisition Jason Taylor; linebackers London Fletcher and Rocky McIntosh, cornerback Carlos Rogers and safety LaRon Landry. Also missing were Washington's two top running backs — Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts — and rookie receiver Devin Thomas, their top draft pick.
Adam Vinatieri kicked two field goals and Adam Crossett one for Indy, with the only touchdown coming on a 30-yard TD pass from Gray to Onrea Jones.
Zorn kept Washington's perfect record in Hall of Fame Games intact. The Redskins are now 5-0 in Canton.
Indy, winners of five straight AFC South titles, lost its fourth straight preseason opener.
