New emergency siren beefs up warning system
Punalu'u has a new emergency warning siren thanks to the state Legislature.
The equipment is meant to complement the existing system and will enhance warnings from Ka'a'awa to Hau'ula, said state Sen. Clayton Hee, D-23rd (Kahuku, La'ie, Ka'a'a- wa, Kane'ohe), who attended the system's test last week.
"There was some concern that the existing one doesn't reach all of the residents," said Hee.
The new siren is a solar-powered, self-sustaining unit, he said.
The state Civil Defense and the city Department of Emergency Management conducted the test.
