A 14-year-old "veteran" phenom and a state champion tennis player won Interscholastic League of Honolulu golf championships yesterday at Waialae Country Club.

Punahou freshman Cyd Okino, who had two holes-in-one by age 8 and won the State Women's Match Play title at age 11, edged out teammates Anna Jang and Alina Ching with a hard-fought nine-over-par 81 to win by two strokes.

Her two-day total — the first round was played at Oahu Country Club on April 14 — was a 16-over 159.

Meanwhile, Punahou senior Alex Ching, who won a state tennis doubles championship last year with classmate Erik Shoji, rallied past Kamehameha senior TJ Kua on the final hole to shoot a 3-over 75 and win by two strokes.

Ching fired a 7-under 64 in the first round at OCC last week and finished with a two-day total of 4-under 139.

"This was fun, it's a good feeling," said Ching, who did not play high school golf until this year. "I've played a lot of junior golf, but this year I wanted to represent my school and play for Punahou, I figured it would be really fun, especially since I'm a senior."

Waialae proved to be a tougher challenge than Oahu, as none of the 10 girls and only four of the 22 boys improved on their score from last week.

Kua, who opened the day a stroke behind Ching, went back-and-forth with his good junior golf friend until they entered the final hole tied.

But Kua hooked his drive on the par-5 18th and ended up two-putting for bogey. Ching hit a pitching wedge from 110 yards to 10 feet, then sank the birdie putt.

"TJ had a couple of bad breaks on the last hole," Ching said. "The greens were fast today and the winds were up, so the main thing I tried to do was keep the ball in play. OCC is my home course, so I had an advantage there. But today was tougher."

After receiving his medal and finishing newspaper interviews, Ching headed to Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park to pair with Shoji to win their ILH championship quarterfinal match.

Okino has been able to focus on golf since bursting upon the scene early in her pre-teen years, and this gold medal is another new piece of hardware to add to her already crowded trophy case.

"It feels really good to win, now I want to win states," said Okino, in her first year at Punahou. "I never played on a school team before, so this is a whole different experience."

Okino began the day two strokes behind classmate Alina Ching but caught her early by parring four of the first five holes. But Jang, a junior who also began the day two strokes back, shot a 3-over 39 on the front nine to lead Okino by one.

But Okino took the lead back on the par-5 No. 10 with a birdie, while Jang bogeyed. Okino then held off Jang despite some tenuous moments on the green.

"The rest of the way was all shaky," Okino said. "The ball was just not going into the hole. There were a few lip-outs; my round would have been better if I putted better. And the wind was a lot stronger than the weather (reports)."
