Army Community Theatre's "Bye Bye Birdie," a musical chestnut inspired by Elvis Presley's stint in the Army, will open May 8 at Richardson Theatre, Fort Shafter, where it will run weekends through May 24.
The tale — a rock 'n' roll singer about to be inducted into the U.S. Army, whose manager and a secretary Rose concoct one final publicity plan before he leaves — is known for its famous title song and the teen girls' cries, "We Love You Conrad."
The production features Joey Caldarone as Conrad Birdie, the titular figure, Shanan Colvin as Rose and James Santos as Albert.
Scott Rodgers is directing, with Katherine Jones as choreographer and Keith Griffin musical director.
Curtain time is 7:30 p.m., with the premiere on a Thursday, followed by Friday-Saturday shows.
Colvin, an Army wife, made her Honolulu stage debut in the title role of ACT's recent "Aida." Santos just starred in Manoa Valley Theatre's "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change," and Caldarone starred as The Engineer in the Po'okela Award-winning "Miss Saigon" at ACT.
Also in the cast are Trevor Misplay as Hugo Peabody, Kanani Rogers as Kim Macafee, Ann Ogilvie as Mae Peterson, David Vega as Harry Macafee, Kamie Hobbs Berkey as Doris Macafee, Ryan Eror as Randolph Macafee, Elise Levin as Ursula Merkle and Lisa Rodvien as Mrs. Merkle.
Tickets: $12 to $20, at the ACT box office.
