HPU SWEEPS UHH
Jessica Adolph singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and pitched two-hit ball over three scoreless innings in relief as Hawai'i Pacific beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-4, yesterday in the first game of a doubleheader at the UHH Softball Field.
Adolph hit a two-run homer and Tajia Acierto blasted a grand slam as the Sea Warriors (37-5-1) completed the sweep of the Vulcans (9-12-1) with an 11-1 victory in the second game, which was halted after five innings because of the mercy rule.
In the opener, Adolph batted 3 for 4, including an RBI single in the first when HPU took a 4-0 lead.
Hilo tied the score with four runs in the bottom of the inning, which was spiced by Jerica Faasua's three-run homer.
The score remained tied until the seventh when Nicole Kalakau drew a one-out walk. Pinch-runner Ashley Fernandez took second on a groundout and stole third before Adolph singled to center to put HPU ahead 5-4.
Acierto, Anuhea Young, Laine Shikuma and Krystal Plunkett each had two hits with Plunkett contributing an RBI single and two-run single in support of Sherise Musquiz, who allowed seven hits and one run in five innings to earn the victory.
