Sustainability planned for new science building
Maui Community College is proposing to construct a $39 million science building that will incorporate sustainable design elements and technologies.
The two-story, 40,000-square-foot building would be on the west side of the Kahului campus. The reinforced-concrete and steel structure would have photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and/or solar thermal panels to reduce the need for offsite electrical power generation.
The new facilities will meet Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design Silver Certification criteria, according to MCC.
In addition to modern laboratory and classroom space, the project includes a telescope building and a 61-stall paved parking lot.
It is not expected to result in any significant environmental or cultural impacts, MCC said.
May 8 is the deadline to submit comments for a draft environmental assessment of the project. Comments may be sent to Helber Hastert & Fee, Planners, 733 Bishop St., Suite 2590, Honolulu, HI 96813, and the state Office of Environmental Quality Control.
