A measure that would have required licenses for people counseling those with genetic disorders in their families is being vetoed by Lt. Gov. James Aiona.
The bill was intended to ensure access to qualified genetic counseling services.
Aiona writes in his veto message that licensing genetic counselors would only give them a title and do nothing to prohibit the activity of nonlicensed practitioners.
He cites a 2006 state auditor's report critical of a similar measure in making his decision.
Aiona signed the veto because he's acting governor while Gov. Linda Lingle is meeting with five other Republican governors in Texas before traveling to a robotics competition in Atlanta.
