A Makawao man shot to death by Maui police Friday while fleeing from a drug raid with a 17-year-old girl was driving a stolen car while under the influence of an intoxicant, according to a police statement released yesterday.

George Henry Brittain Jr., 38, was found dead in the car about a mile from the shooting scene on Ho'omaha Road in Makawao. An autopsy said Brittain died of internal bleeding from a gunshot wound near his armpit.

Toxicology findings indicated Brittain had methamphetamine in his system, police said. Drug residue and drug paraphernalia were found during a search of the vehicle, which was stolen from the Kahului Airport parking lot March 12, the release said.

Preliminary findings of a Maui police internal investigation indicate the actions of the officers were justified, the release said. The investigation is ongoing and findings will be forwarded to the department's Administrative Review Board. The case will also be submitted to the prosecutor's office for final review.

Police went to a house at 241 Ho'omaha Road about 6 a.m. Friday with a warrant to search a metal warehouse on the property, the release said. Brittain and a 17-year-old girl were in a car parked inside the warehouse, police said. Brittain ignored officers' commands to get out of the car, police said.

The release said Brittain reversed the car at officers and toward the warehouse door. The officers fired their weapons at the car to stop it but the car crashed through the metal door. Three officers behind the door were thrown backwards, the release said.

Officers fired at the car a second time as it approached another officer, the release said.

The three officers who were behind the warehouse door are still being treated for injuries, which are not life-threatening, the release said.

Brittain drove off the property and was not pursued by the officers at the residence. Brittain, with the girl in the car, drove to a nearby house off Kealaloa Avenue. There, police found him dead in the car.
