BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentina eliminated Sweden from the Davis Cup today behind David Nalbandian's five-set victory over Robin Soderling, setting up a semifinal at home against Russia.
Nalbandian won 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-4, 9-7 on a windy day on clay in 4 hours, 15 minutes in the first reverse singles. The decision gave Argentina an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five quarterfinal.
It was Argentina's 12th straight Davis Cup victory at home since 1998. Russia beat Argentina for the Davis Cup in 2006.
In the fifth set, Soderling had to save three match points to hold service to 5-5. Nalbandian then got the final break in the 16th game to seal the victory.
