Lahaina housing project proposed
WAILUKU — West Maui Land Co. is proposing an 88-unit affordable housing subdivision in Lahaina, the Maui News reported.
The Kahoma Residential Subdivision would involve 16.6 acres of agricultural land running along the Kahoma Stream channel, abutting the existing Kelawea and old Pioneer Mill subdivisions. The project would include four self-help parcels to be developed with Habitat for Humanity; an additional 24 parcels would be developed by Lokahi Pacific.
Thirty-five parcels would be sold as empty lots for owners to build their own homes.
The plan also includes 25 multifamily units that would be developed by Lokahi Pacific for special-needs housing.
The entire project is planned to be sold in the affordable price-range, and West Maui Land is expected to file a Section 201H application for "fast track" affordable housing approval.
In a related project, Peter Martin of West Maui Land, with his wife, Deborah, is proposing to build a one-story home on land he owns in Olowalu.
The home would be on 0.8 acres about 70 feet from the shoreline. The property is in the special management area and requires a state conservation district use permit.
Draft environmental assessments have been issued for both projects, and comments are due by April 22.
The drafts can be viewed by going to www.state.hi.us/health/oeqc/rules/index.html, clicking on "EA and EIS Online Library," and clicking on the Maui folder.
