No. 6 Moanalua edges Castle, 4-3

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KANE'OHE — Dawn Dela Cruz stroked a line single to left field to bring home sister Hoku Dela Cruz from third base with two outs in the top of the seventh inning yesterday to lift Moanalua over Castle, 4-3, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association softball action.

Na Menehune, ranked No. 6 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-1 in the OIA's Eastern Division. The Knights, ranked No. 9, fell to 4-2.

Dawn Dela Cruz, a senior center fielder who grounded out in her first two at-bats, also slammed a two-run, inside-the-park home run to left to tie the score 3-3 in the sixth inning.

The home run, which came on an 0-1 pitch with no outs, soared over the left fielder's head and kept rolling on Castle's fenceless outfield.

"I just wanted to hit the ball solid, because the first two times I didn't," said Dela Cruz, who grounded to second in the second inning and hit into a force play in the third. "I felt the ball hit the sweet spot and I knew I just had to run."

She scored standing up, following Britni Ronolo who had led off the sixth with a walk.

"We were playing her straight up (in left field) and she just got a hold of one," said Castle coach Jon Berinobis. "It was a nice hit."

The Knights got their first two runners aboard in the bottom half and had runners on second and third with one out, but Moanalua starter Sarah Robinson escaped the jam with a strikeout and infield pop-up.

Hoku Dela Cruz then led off the seventh by legging out an infield single to third, and advanced to third base after an error and a groundout to short. She came home after sister Dawn lined a 3-1 pitch to left.

"She has it in her, it was just a matter of time," Na Menehune coach Kristie Morikawa said of Dawn Dela Cruz. "We've just been working on doing our jobs, that's what we put up on the strategy board. We knew this wasn't going to be a high-scoring battle."

Moanalua had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Michelle Acosta led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a groundout to short and scored on another wild pitch.

Castle tied it in the third after Kori Berinobis walked with two outs, advanced to second on Kelsea Berinobis' single to left and scored on Leisha Li'ili'i's single to right field.

The Knights then took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on run-scoring singles by Kaitlyn Wills and Kori Berinobis.

Robinson, a senior right-hander, finished with eight strikeouts and three walks in a complete-game victory.
