Hawaii Superferry has paid the state nearly $500,000 in various fees since relaunching Dec. 13, according to the Department of Transportation.

Under an operating agreement with the DOT, the company must pay on a monthly basis 1 percent of its adjusted gross receipts plus passenger and vehicle fees or $191,667, whichever is greater.

The arrangement calling for a minimum annual guarantee of roughly $2.3 million is in effect for each of the first three years of the 22-year deal. It is intended to reimburse the DOT Harbor Fund for $40 million in ferry-related improvements at four ports.

Future payment amounts will be renegotiated in years four, 10 and 15.

The amount due the state is prorated. Because of bad weather and repairs, the high-speed interisland ferry has been out of service more days than it has been operating.

From Dec. 13 through Feb. 29, Superferry paid $325,835 toward its minimum guarantee, the DOT reported. The ferry also paid for two days of operation in August, before it halted service in response to court rulings related to environmental concerns.

The company additionally paid $9,344 in dockage fees, $2,987 in parking, ground transportation permit and other miscellaneous fees, and $145,594 for rent of office, storage, warehouse and open paved space at Kahului, Honolulu and Nawiliwili harbors.

Adding in loose change, the total amounts to $483,761, according to the DOT.

Payments for March, when the ferry was in drydock, are not yet due.
