BYUH, HPU tennis players win regional titles

Tyler Valdes of Dana Hills (Calif.) holds off Leilehua's Bryce Jenkins to win the boys varsity 3-mile race of the Honolulu Marathon/Kaiser High Cross Country Invitational at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park yesterday. Heather Balbier of Dana Hills won the girls 3-mile race. Mililani's Kristin Ali Keith placed third. Dana Hills won both team titles. Leilehua's boys and Punahou's girls placed second.

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Elwen Li and Maggie Deng, and Hawai'i Pacific's Hendrik Bode captured titles yesterday at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regionals in Pomona, Calif.

Li defeated Deng, 6-0, 6-0, to capture the women's singles title. The Seasider duo also won the doubles crown, beating HPU's Tinka Mihova and Elena Hudzikova, 8-3. Earlier, Li and Deng ousted HPU's Nina Mihova and Ingrid Cseh, 8-2, in the semifinals.

Bode beat UC-San Diego's Bijan Moallemi, 7-6, 6-3, in the men's final. Bode and Nikola Petrov fell 9-8 in the doubles final.


MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

VITALE VICTORIOUS

Hawai'i's Falaniko Vitale defeated Ohio's Ron Fields by technical knockout on the undercard of a mixed martial arts event put on by the Strikeforce organization last night at California.

The "Strikeforce at the Mansion" card was held at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Vitale took Fields to the ground, and then unloaded a series of unanswered punches. The referee stopped the contest, 3 minutes, 2 seconds, into the first round.

Vitale improved to 24-7 with his second career victory over Fields (18-22-1).


SURFING

FANNING STAYS NO. 1

Australia's Mick Fanning won the Quiksilver Pro France men's surfing contest yesterday, solidifying his No. 1 ranking on the 2007 World Championship Tour.

Fanning defeated South Africa's Greg Emslie in the final heat, 18.43-11.63. He received $30,000 for the victory.

Fanning also increased his lead in the chase for the 2007 world title. Through seven of 10 events, Fanning has 6,470 points.

Kaua'i's Andy Irons is ranked No. 5 with 4,741 points. Pancho Sullivan of Sunset Beach tied for ninth place in the Quiksilver Pro France and moved up to No. 6 in the overall rankings.


VOLLEYBALL

HPU DEFEATS CU

Freshman Kelly Balanay hammered 26 kills and hit .451 as Hawai'i Pacific rallied past Chaminade, 23-30, 30-26, 22-30, 30-21, 19-17, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at Blaisdell Arena.

Antje Buskies added 18 kills and 13 digs, and Jackie Tedesco had 27 digs for the Sea Warriors (6-9, 1-3 PacWest).

Trina Kauliakamoa had 30 kills and 17 digs, and Evelyn Bluthenthal added 19 kills for the Silverswords (8-4, 1-3).

CROSS COUNTRY



UH FINISHES SEVENTH

The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team, led by senior Chantelle Wilder's ninth-place finish, placed seventh in the 15-team Gold Division field of the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational at Salem, Ore.

Wilder finished the 5-kilometer race in a personal-best 17 minutes, 43 seconds. Marilyn Arsenault, running unattached, won in 17:21.

The Rainbow Wahine scored 201 points. Idaho won with 26.


SOCCER

BYUH SWEEPS CU

Trenton Read scored with a little more than a minute left in the second overtime as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Chaminade, 2-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's match at the Saint Louis School field.

Adam Maciejewski also scored for the Seasiders (6-6 overall, 2-1 PacWest). Jason Gomez scored a goal and Darren Smith made 11 saves for the Silverswords (2-9-1, 0-3).

In the women's match, Kahanu Ah Puck and Alexa Page scored to lead BYUH (7-3-1, 4-0) past Chaminade (0-8, 0-3), 2-0.

Marissa Minor made 13 saves for the Silverswords.

SWIMMING & DIVING



UH WINS, LOSES

The University of Hawai'i men's swimming and diving team beat Arizona State yesterday for the second straight day while the Rainbow Wahine fell to the Sun Devils once again.

Nicolla Xella, Greg Wilson, Grzegorz Mroz and diver Magnus Frick each won two events as the Rainbow Warriors (2-0) beat the Sun Devils (0-2), 169-112, at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.

Brianna de Palezieux, Emma Berry and diver Stephanie De Lima each won two events in the Rainbow Wahine's (0-2) 159-122 loss to the Sun Devils (0-2).
