KKEA radio vowed to secure time on an additional station in the future, if necessary, to prevent situations such as what occurred Saturday night when listeners were left hanging for the final result of the University of Hawai'i's volleyball victory over New Mexico State.
KKEA, which had provided periodic updates, gave the last one at 13-13 in Game 5. The station switched to the UH football pre-game show as the Rainbow Wahine served for the match. The final result of UH's 30-26, 28-30, 30-27, 28-30, 23-21 victory wasn't given until 10 minutes later.
Upset fans contacted the station, UH and The Advertiser. UH volleyball coach Dave Shoji said at the time: "That was bad. Why would they do that?"
Monday KKEA carried UH-San Jose State volleyball and pre-empted Monday Night Football, general manager Randal Ikeda said. "In both situations, we could have called K-108 and said, 'hey, could you handle one of the games?' That way the listener doesn't lose a game," Ikeda said.
Ikeda said, "We were talking about it as a staff and I don't know why we didn't do it. We've done it before. We just forgot. I mean, there is no other explanation."
"It was an unfortunate situation," said John McNamara, UH associate athletic director. "But they have informed us they are going to identify another station to carry a game when they see a conflict and we think the fans will be pleased with that arrangement."
Ikeda said it has been station policy not to start a broadcast of one event if KKEA knows it will have to pre-empt it later for another event.
