Honolulu police were investigating a rash of forgery and counterfeiting cases this weekend.
At least five people were arrested in separate cases from Waikiki to Wai'anae between Friday and yesterday afternoon. The cases all appeared to be unrelated, police said.
A 30-year-old man was arrested at a Honolulu hotel on Friday after he tried to pass a counterfeit $500 traveler's check. The clerk at the hotel recognized him as the same man who had used another counterfeit traveler's check to rent a room earlier this month and summoned police. He was charged with forgery.
A 26-year-old man was arrested late Friday night when he tried to buy beer at a Wahiawa store using a phony $20 bill. He was charged with forgery.
A 50-year-old woman who tried to cash three counterfeit money orders at a Waipahu retail store Friday night was arrested after the cashier recognized the fake and called police. She was charged with forgery.
A 24-year-old man was arrested yesterday after trying to buy merchandise using a counterfeit traveler's check at a Pearl City store. He was charged with second-degree forgery.
A 51-year-old man was arrested yesterday after he tried to cash counterfeit business checks at a Wai'anae check cashing business. The clerk at the business became suspicious and called police, who filed a robbery charge against the man.
