Mustangs stop No. 10 Knights in East, 29-13

Riding a season-long wave of resurgence, Kalaheo upset No. 10 Castle, 29-13, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East game last night at Kailua.
Kalaheo improved to 4-1, 2-1. Castle fell to 2-3, 2-1.
"We're riding this momentum right now," said Mustangs' head coach Chris Mellor. "We beat a class-act team with a class-act head coach."
Castle, which managed just 134 total yards, never got into its rhythm.
After the Knights' went three-and-out on their first possession, Kalaheo marched 59 yards on 10 plays, capped by Max Karsten's 2-yard touchdown run.
Castle came back with a long drive of its own. The Knights ran on 10 of their 12 plays, aided by a 15-yard personal foul on Kalaheo. Thomas Ilae connected with Nainoa Haitsuka on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 1:46 left in the opening quarter. Kevin Aipia's extra point tied it at 7.
Castle quarterback Blake Rapozo was hit as he threw on fourth-and-28 from the Kalaheo 30-yard line by a pair of Mustangs and his pass was too high for Breydan Torres.
Kalaheo took over on downs and relied on its sure-handed senior backs, Karsten and Larry Soto, to move the ball downfield.
Karsten carried three times for 14 yards on the drive and Soto twice for 15 yards, including the go-ahead score, a 12-yard run with 3:01 left in the first half. The extra point was blocked and Kalaheo led 13-6 at halftime.
Kalaheo's Micah Brigoli recovered a Castle fumble on the ensuing kickoff. The Mustangs got down to the Castle 2-yard line, but their gamble to run on third-and-goal four seconds left was stuffed.
Castle ran 12 plays for minus-24 yards in the third quarter.
"We were inefficient, we just couldn't produce," said Castle coach Nelson Maeda. "They killed us on ball control."
The Mustangs had all the momentum in the second half. After Kalaheo blocked a punt deep in Knights' territory, quarterback Cody vonAppen found Kao Malama-Custer for an 8-yard touchdown pass to make it 19-7 with eight minutes left in the third quarter.
Following a 26-yard field goal by Nathan Johnson, Karsten found the end zone once more, this time on a 3-yard dive.
Knights' defensive tackle Solomon Koehler was ejected with less than four minutes to play in the first half.
Maeda said Castle administrators will review the film, but as it stands, Koehler is out for next week Friday's game against Kailua.
