Ex-'Bow Akana on Bucks' staff

Former University of Hawai'i basketball standout Jarinn Akana has been named assistant coach for player development for the Milwaukee Bucks.
Akana, a Moloka'i High standout, spent the past six seasons with the Denver Nuggets, most recently serving as a scout from 2005-07.
Akana joins Tony Brown, Brian James, Bill Peterson and Jim Todd on the coaching staff of head coach Larry Krystkowiak.
"Jarinn brings a great deal of developmental coaching experience to our club," said Krystkowiak. "He understands the game and how to get the most out of players. I am very excited about what he brings to our team."
Akana played three seasons with UH from 1991-94. He helped lead the team to a 1994 NCAA Tournament berth.

Beach volleyball: A qualifier for the EVP Tour World Championship beach volleyball tournament will be today at Queen's Beach in Waikiki. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. For players, the cost is $30 per player. High school: Kamehameha's girls moved up two notches to No. 3 in www.PrepVolleyball.com's Century Club National Top 100 High School Rankings, the Web site reported. The Warriors (6-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu) were No. 5 in the preseason ranking, as well as in last week's ranking. Kamehameha is 23-0 overall. 'Iolani, which was No. 26 in preseason and dropped to No. 66 last week, moved up to No. 47. PrepVolleyball.com also listed four Hawai'i teams "on the bubble:" Kahuku, Moanalua, Punahou and Roosevelt.
