Kono, Kim can't keep U.S. from loss in Junior Solheim

Advertiser Staff

Stephanie Kono won her singles match but lost both her team matches, and Kimberly Kim went 0-3 in her second Ping Junior Solheim Cup appearance. The European team beat the United States, 14-10, to regain the Cup in Bastad, Sweden.

The Europeans won seven of Wednesday's 12 singles matches to clinch it.

Patterned after the Solheim Cup, which starts today, the Ping Junior Solheim Cup features the top 12 girls from the United States against those from Europe.

Kono, a Punahou senior, is currently fourth in the Polo Junior Golf Rankings. She and Kim, a former Hilo resident who moved to Arizona last year, lost their Foursome match Tuesday morning. They were beaten by Spain's Marta Silva and England's Florentyna Parker, 5 and 4.

The Cup score stood 3-3 after the morning matches. Europe won four of the six afternoon Four-Ball matches to take a 7-5 advantage going into Wednesday's singles. Kono and Jane Rah fell to Silva and Carlota Ciganda, also from Spain, 4 and 2, in the afternoon. Kim, second in the Polo rankings, played with Brianna Do. They lost, 3 and 2, to Swedish twins Caroline and Jacqueline Hedwall.

Kono rallied Wednesday to win her singles match, 1-up, over Silva. Kim lost, 1-up, to Parker.

SURFING

ISLE SURFERS ADVANCE

Hawai'i surfers Fred Patacchia Jr. and Pancho Sullivan advanced to the fourth round of the Boost Mobile Pro men's contest yesterday.

The third round was completed yesterday in 2- to 3-foot waves at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif.

Patacchia defeated Australia's Adrian Buchan in the third round, 12.27-10.9. Sullivan defeated South Africa's Ricky Basnett, 14.5-11.73.

"It picked up a little bit today, I had some bigger waves than yesterday," Sullivan said. "I really expected these sort of conditions at least one day for this event, so I have been practicing very hard to work with these conditions."

The Irons brothers from Kaua'i were upset in yesterday's third round.

Andy Irons, who entered the contest ranked No. 3 in the world, lost to wild-card entry Jordy Smith of South Africa.

"Andy is a very tough competitor," said Smith, who won the heat, 15.67-12.4. "He just waits for the best waves each time and usually gets them. I guess I just got the better ones this time."

Brazil's Rodrigo Dornelles defeated Bruce Irons, 16.77-9.77.

The contest is the sixth of 10 on the 2007 World Championship Tour.
