Child molestation suspect arrested

The U.S. Marshals Service and sheriff's deputies of the Hawai'i Fugitive Task Force in Honolulu have arrested a man from Washington state wanted on a child molestation warrant.

Frank Goodnight, 47, was arrested Tuesday at a homeless shelter at 6:45 p.m. based on information provided by the Marshals Service in Tacoma, Wash.

A warrant was issued for Goodnight's arrest on March 7, 2006, when he failed to appear in a Pierce County, Wash., Superior Court on charges of molesting a 13-year-old girl.

MAN, 28, ARRESTED IN KALIHI ASSAULT

Police arrested a 28-year-old man yesterday in Kalihi after a 62-year-old man was hit on the head with a pipe and knocked unconscious.

Bystanders intervened, stopping the attacker from landing more blows and holding the suspect until officers arrived, police said. The victim's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. He was taken to a hospital.

Police said the two men had been involved in an altercation and that the victim was struck on the head from behind as he walked away from the suspect on Kalihi Street about 2 a.m. Police arrested him for investigation of second-degree assault.



BIG ISLAND SURFER DIES OFF POHOIKI

A 58-year-old man died yesterday while surfing off Isaac Hale Beach Park on the Big Island, the Hawai'i County fire department said.

Beachgoers said the man had been seen surfing, but later was found floating face-down in the water at 11:42 a.m. Surfers and lifeguards brought him to shore, where lifeguards performed CPR. The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials classified the case as a possible drowning.



NO CHARGES FILED IN MAN'S STABBING

Prosecutors yesterday declined to charge a 20-year-old 'Ewa Beach woman and released her pending further investigation in an assault case involving the stabbing of her boyfriend early yesterday.

The man, 24, was stabbed in the chest with a scissors-like instrument after allegedly attacking the woman during a domestic argument at their Fort Weaver Road home.

The victim is hospitalized at The Queen's Medical Center with a punctured lung in serious but stable condition, police said. He faces arrest for abuse of a household member upon his release from the hospital, police said.

Police had arrested the woman on suspicion of first-degree assault in connection with the stabbing.



BIG ISLE POLICE GET GRANT TO FIGHT ICE

Big Island police will receive a $443,405 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, to help combat the manufacture, use and distribution of methamphetamine, and to collaborate with other entities in the prevention and treatment of meth abuse, U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawai'i, said.



MO'ILI'ILI FESTIVAL SCHEDULED OCT. 6

The 12th annual Discover Mo'ili'ili Festival is set for Oct. 6.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Old Stadium Park, and will feature free entertainment, food and crafts. Free parking is available at Varsity Theatre and Kuhio Elementary School and a shuttle will transport attendees to the park.

Entertainment will include performances from the Small World Harmonica Band, Yamada Dance Group and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.
