Kate Spade began with a handmade burlap handbag and has grown her company into a multimillion-dollar fashion and lifestyle corporation. Now she has opened her first Hawai'i boutique, in the renovated Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.
Her aesthetic is all-American prep, with a girl-next-door freshness about it. Now a lifestyle brand, her name is emblazoned on everything from handbags to shoes, stationary to luggage and apparel to accessories. A recent mother, she even has a Kate Spade baby line.
NEIMAN MARCUS CENTENNIAL
Neiman Marcus is celebrating its 100th anniversary this week in its inimitable style. Dozens of design houses from all over the world created exclusive apparel, jewelry, cosmetics and accessories to honor the occasion. It's an unparalleled treasure trove for the fashionista. Among the offerings, available in the Ala Moana store or at neimanmarcus.com: a Buccellati NM butterfly cuff with 520 diamonds, at $150,000; a Donna Karan Collection ultraviolet silk satin and taffeta gown, at $3,600; a Marc Jacobs gray/silver "Stam" handbag, at $1,800; a Prada sneaker with crocodile trim, at $995; RéVive Masques des Yeux, an intensive eye treatment, at $185; a Van Cleef & Arpels 18-karat white gold and diamond "Dentelle Diamond Butterfly" watch, at $27,500.
A more affordable keepsake (at $100) is the Neiman Marcus Pop-Up book. A photographer in Dallas collaborated with paper engineers in England and Holland to create the fabulous memento of 100 years of style. Inspired by a "Cinderella" book beloved by a Neiman Marcus executive, the contemporary take on the pop-up book is nothing short of enchanting.
