Two QBs team up in Kailua victory

What some might consider a quarterback controversy, Kailua head coach Gary Rosolowich considers a luxury.
The duo of Kenny Ellis and Kale Sumner accounted for three scores and the Surfriders put on an offensive assault against McKinley, 48-28, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East Division game at Roosevelt last night.
Kailua is 1-3, 1-1 in the Red East. McKinley falls to 0-4, 0-2.
"This win is a boost of confidence," Ellis said. "It's our first win and hopefully we can keep it going next week against Kahuku."
Kailua got the scoring going early. Sumner connected with Ellis for a 27-yard touchdown pass on Kailua's first possession. Sumner hit the 6-foot-5, 210-pound junior in stride on a streak route.
The Surfriders capitalized on their next offensive series.
Ellis scrambled for a 55-yard gain that set up a 6-yard touchdown run by Kaleo Wong with 3:25 left in the opening quarter. Eddie Oden's extra point made it 14-0.
When one is playing quarterback, the other is usually at receiver.
"They're both very talented athletes," Rosolowich said. "(Ellis) was injured early on and Kale was doing the job, so you have to find room on the field for both of them and it worked and I think we caught McKinley a little flat-footed."
Kailua had 311 yards of total offense — 203 rushing. Ellis finished with 55 yards on 9-of-11 passing and Sumner threw for 53 yards, with all three of his completions going for touchdowns.
After a McKinley three-and-out, Sumner tossed a 20-yard scoring strike to Jackie Uemoto with 7:21 left in the second to make it 21-0.
"I faked to (Ellis) on the other side and threw it to (Uemoto) on the backside and hoped that it was open," said Sumner, a 5-foot-10, 177-pound junior.
McKinley got within 21-7 on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Earvin Sione to Will Starks.
Kailua made it 28-7 on a 3-yard TD run by Kaimi Sarkissian just before the half, and led 42-14 after three periods.
