A toddler was apparently uninjured after a stolen Ford Ranger pickup in which he was riding with a man and woman crashed and overturned yesterday in Kapolei, police said.
The boy, who appeared to be about 18 months old and dressed in an orange jersey and shorts, was taken to the Kapolei police substation, where he was treated by paramedics. He seemed to be unharmed and was smiling and waving at officers and EMS personnel at the station.
The crash occurred shortly after noon on Kapolei Parkway, about a tenth of a mile from the entrance to Kapolei High School.
Authorities at the scene said the vehicle flipped over and moments later, the man and woman were seen leaving the scene while the engine of the pickup continued to run. The woman apparently was carrying the boy as she fled.
Police found the couple and the child at a home about two blocks from the crash site. The driver was arrested on suspicion of auto theft. Both adults were taken into custody, and police indicated other charges could be brought.
EMS personnel transported the child to Hawaii Medical Center-West for examination. Paramedics said the child would be turned over to officials from the Child Protective Services after that examination.
