Gac's solo homer lifts CaneFires to 6-5 victory

Ian Gac hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to help the West Oahu CaneFires rally from a five-run deficit and beat the Waikiki BeachBoys, 6-5, last night in a Hawaii Winter League baseball game at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.
The CaneFires (7-15-1) ended a three-game losing streak by rallying for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to top the BeachBoys (10-13).
Anthony Hatch had a three-run double and Russell Mitchell an RBI single in the seventh to spark the CaneFires.
West Oahu reliever Tyler Chambliss (1-1, 5.09 ERA) earned the win after striking out five in two innings, and Marco Gonzalez closed out the ninth inning for his first save of the season.
Waikiki right fielder Michael Wilson hit his eighth double of the season, drove in a run and scored twice. Josh Sullivan fell to 0-3 after allowing all six CaneFires runs, though only one was earned.
In the early game yesterday, Matt Wieters went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a solo home run, and three runs scored to help the Honolulu Sharks beat the North Shore Honu, 16-6, at Hans L'Orange Park.
Brandon Snyder also had four hits for Honolulu (12-10-1), which racked up 22 as a team. Snyder scored three times and had three RBIs with his two singles, a double and a triple.
Honolulu scored five runs in each of the first and second innings, and chased North Shore starter Logan Ondrusek (1-2, 5.71 ERA) who allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Sharks center fielder Austin Jackson chipped in three hits and scored twice while teammate Miguel Abreu went 3 for 5 with two doubles.
Ryohei Tanaka improved to 3-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.82 as the Sharks starter surrendered one run on seven hits and struck out five in five innings.
North Shore (16-7) had 14 hits, four by Jeramy Laster, who doubled, drove in a run and scored twice. Teammate Stephen Chapman went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs.

UTAH STATE HOLDS OFF HAWAI'I WOMEN, 3-2
The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit, but fell to Utah State, 3-2, yesterday in Logan, Utah, for its first Western Athletic Conference defeat of the season.
After trailing 2-0 at intermission, the Rainbow Wahine scored twice in the first 12 minutes of the second half on goals by Ambree Ako and Tehane Higa. It was Ako's ninth goal of the season.
UH got its first goal less than four minutes after the break when Jessica Domingo sliced through the Aggie defense and passed to Ako who sent a left-footer from 5 yards out into the net.
UH equalized 10 minutes later off a corner kick. Koren Takeyama served the ball from the left corner and found Higa, whose header skimmed off the inside of the near post. It was Higa's fifth goal of the year.
Abby Hunt scored twice for the Aggies (7-10, 3-2 WAC), including the game-winner late in the second half.
Hawai'i is 10-4-2 and 3-1 and will play at Louisiana Tech tomorrow.

UH-HILO, CHAMINADE SWEEP TO VICTORIES
Fabiane Seben had 15 kills and Hillary Hurley added 10 as the University of Hawai'i-Hilo rolled over Grand Canyon, 30-22, 30-17, 30-23, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match last night in Hilo.
Laura Rodriguez had 14 digs for the Vulcans (20-5, 11-0 PacWest).
Dana Edington led Grand Canyon (7-15, 3-7) with 14 kills.
In another PacWest match last night in Honolulu, Chaminade got 16 kills from Samantha Miller en route to a 30-23, 30-24, 30-26, win over Dixie State.
Evelyn Bluthenthal added 13 kills for Chaminade (11-6, 5-5).
Cami Johnson led Dixie State (5-22, 3-9) with nine kills.

ABE, WENDLAND MISS CUT IN FLORIDA EVENT
Shane Abe of Oahu Country Club missed the cut yesterday at the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Abe shot 75-79—154 over two rounds at the par-72 Wanamaker Course.
Alva Wendland, a former University of Hawai'i-Hilo golfer, shot 80-75—155 and also missed the cut.
Troy Muller of Deltona, Fla., shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to take the lead at 6-under-par 138.
