A 23-year-old Kalihi man died yesterday morning after his motorcycle collided with a car in Nanakuli, police said.

Police said the man was riding a red Honda motorcycle when it collided with the car driven by a 41-year-old woman late Thursday night at the intersection of Farrington Highway and Lualualei Road.

The man, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said. There were no other injuries. Speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash, police said.

It was the 51st traffic fatality on O'ahu this year, compared with 79 at this time last year.

PAPAKOLEA FIRE'S CAUSE UNKNOWN

The Honolulu Fire Department's fire investigator has determined that the cause of a Thursday morning house fire in Papakolea is undetermined and that the fire began in the living room.

The fire destroyed a 50-year-old, wooden construction one-story house at 2401 Tantalus Drive, causing $400,000 in damage to the structure and $15,000 in damage to the home's contents, according to a fire department news release.

Two other houses were also damaged. One sustained $100,000 in damage to its structure and $20,000 to it contents. The other sustained $25,000 in damage to its structure and $5,000 to contents.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 6:02 a.m. and brought the fire under control at 6:52 a.m. It was extinguished at 8:20 a.m. No injuries were reported.

NORTH SHORE FESTIVAL CANCELED

Organizers of the North Shore Festival announced yesterday that this year's festival has been canceled.

Despite an all-time high in vendor applications and entertainment interest in the two-day event, which had been slated to start Nov. 10 at Hale'iwa Beach Park, organizers said a shortfall of sponsorship dollars prevented the event from moving forward. Vendor deposits will be refunded in full, organizers stated in a news release.

MOTORIST SOUGHT IN HIT-AND-RUN

Police are seeking a motorist responsible for hitting an elderly woman in the parking lot of K-Mart in Iwilei earlier this month and driving off without helping her.

On Oct. 1 at about 2 p.m., the woman was walking in the parking lot when she was hit by a Jeep that was reversing out of a stall, police said. The driver did not stop and left the parking lot in an unknown direction. The driver is described as a white male traveling with two white male passengers, police said.

The woman has a broken right hip and is confined to a care home.

TEENS ARRESTED IN CRIME SPREE

KAUNAKAKAI, Moloka'i — Seven boys ranging in age from 14 to 17 were arrested this week in connection with a crime spree that targeted several homes, a nonprofit agricultural co-op and Moloka'i High School.

The group is believed to be responsible for at least eight cases that occurred between Oct. 11 and 15, according to the Maui Police Department. The crimes include burglaries at homes in Kualapu'u and Ho'olehua and the Hikiola Co-Op, the theft of a golf cart from a Ho'olehua home, theft of items from outside of a Ho'olehua home, and criminal property damage tied to graffiti at the high school, police said.

In addition to the golf cart, cash, checks, video game consoles, and various other electronic devices were recovered by police. The suspects were released into the custody of their parents and face prosecution in Family Court.
