By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The tight race for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference football championship continues this weekend with four quarterfinal games.

Tonight, Kapolei travels to Kahuku, Mililani hosts Leilehua and Kalaheo visits Wai'anae.

Kickoff is set for about 7:30 for all three games. The Leilehua-Mililani game will be televised live statewide on OC16.

Tomorrow, Farrington meets Campbell at Roosevelt, with kickoff around 6:30.

Here is a closer look at all four games:

KALAHEO AT WAI'ANAE

Records: Kalaheo 5-3, Wai'anae 6-2

Advertiser Top 10 ranking: Wai'anae No. 6; Kalaheo unranked

Seeds: Wai'anae Western Division No. 2; Kalaheo East No. 3

Last week: Both teams had byes

Notable: Wai'anae is coming off an impressive 28-7 victory over Kapolei to end the regular season. The Seariders featured a punishing running attack that churned out 226 yards, plus a hard-hitting defense that limited the Hurricanes to 126 total yards. Tailback Justin Kauwalu and fullback Danny Kekoanui give Wai'anae a strong inside-outside combination. ... Kalaheo is coming off a 21-14 victory over McKinley which clinched a three-way tie for third place in the East. The Mustangs then won a coin-toss tiebreaker two days later to receive the No. 3 seed and first-round bye. ... This is Kalaheo's first appearance in the OIA's top-tier playoffs since 1998, when the Mustangs finished second in the third-tier Blue Division and qualified for the overall quarterfinals. ... Kalaheo senior quarterback Cody vonAppen leads a balanced veer-option attack.

KAPOLEI AT KAHUKU

Records: Kapolei 6-3, Kahuku 6-2

Advertiser Top 10 ranking: Kahuku No. 2; Kapolei unranked

Seeds: Kahuku East No. 1; Kapolei West No. 4

Last week: Kapolei defeated Kailua, 14-7; Kahuku had a bye

Notable: Kapolei tied the score at 7-7 just five seconds before halftime in last week's first-round victory over Kailua, then took a 14-7 lead with 56 seconds remaining in the game after an interception by Lyle Santiago led to a 4-yard touchdown run by Cyril Ontai. Santiago then intercepted a pass deep in Kapolei territory with 22 seconds left to seal the win. ... Kahuku has beaten the visiting Hurricanes in the past two quarterfinals, by scores of 33-15 (last year) and 47-7 (in 2005). The Red Raiders again feature a strong ground attack led by backs St. John Lessary and Junior Mata'afa running behind an offensive line that averages over 300 pounds. ... Kapolei won last week despite injuries to quarterback Mason Koa, running back Shenon Moore and two starting offensive lineman. Koa also will line up at receiver on occasion.

LEILEHUA AT MILILANI

Records: Leilehua 5-4, Mililani 7-1

Advertiser Top 10 ranking: Mililani No. 4; Leilehua No. 10

Seeds: Mililani West No. 1; Leilehua West No. 5

Last week: Leilehua defeated Castle, 36-13; Mililani had a bye

Notable: Leilehua trailed Castle 13-0 in the first half before scoring 36 unanswered points. But the Mules suffered key injuries in the game. Quarterbacks Kaipo Kea and Kaipo DeRego both suffered ankle injuries, and DeRego probably will be out of action tonight, coach Nolan Tokuda said. He said Kea might be available. Running back Joedee Taua, normally a scout team quarterback, finished the game but did not attempt any passes. Tokuda said JV quarterback Andrew Manley has been promoted to varsity. ... The Mules already had suffered a key injury the week before, when leading receiver Edieson Dumlao left the Campbell game with a concussion. ... Mililani won the regular-season meeting, 16-14, after Colin Lund kicked a 27-yard field goal with 43 seconds remaining. ... Trojans quarterback Rustin Funakoshi ranks among the state's leaders in passing efficiency, with 77 completions in 148 attempts for 1,139 and eight touchdowns with four interceptions. Sophomore receiver/running back Taz Stevenson ranks among the state's leaders in scoring, with 14 TDs (84 points). Lund has made six field goals and 17 point-after-touchdowns, for 35 points.

FARRINGTON VS. CAMPBELL

Records: Farrington 4-2-2, Campbell 3-3-1

Advertiser Top 10 ranking: Farrington No. 9; Campbell unranked

Seeds: Farrington East No. 2; Campbell West No. 3

Last week: Both teams had byes

Notable: Campbell went from the brink of elimination to third place in the Western Division in a matter of 24 hours. Leilehua was trailing the Sabers 22-21 and driving for a potential winning score in the regular-season finale, but a pass on fourth-and-6 from the Campbell 14-yard line fell incomplete with one minute remaining, keeping the Sabers' playoff hopes alive for one more night. They still needed Wai'anae to defeat Kapolei the following night, which the Seariders did. ... Farrington earned second place in the East by defeating Castle, 25-15, in the regular season finale. Quarterback Alofesiu Iu completed 9 of 18 passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns. ... Govs running back Joshua Fernandez is among the state's rushing leaders with 621 yards and eight touchdowns. Campbell counters with speedy sophomore Samson Anguay (511 yards, seven TDs).
