PEARL CITY — The Western Division had pin-point control of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association bowling championships yesterday at Leeward Bowl.

Mililani swept the boys and girls team titles, while Kapolei's Kimie Roller and Pearl City's James Pirtle claimed individual crowns.

The Trojan girls won their first title since 2000 and snapped 'Aiea's three-year reign. That despite their top bowler having a subpar day.

"Even though I didn't do good as an individual, we still won as a team," said Diana Ishida, who averaged 195 during the regular season but averaged 172 yesterday.

The West champion Trojans beat East runner-up Castle, 2,496 to 2,411 in the semifinals before defeating West runner-up Pearl City, 2,686 to 2,391 in the final.

The Chargers beat East champion Kalani, 2,865 to 2,670 in the semifinals.

The Trojans boys won their fourth title in six years. The West champs beat East runner-up McKinley, 2,875 to 2,740 in the semis before knocking off East champion Kalani, 3,098 to 2,786 in the championship.

Kalani beat Pearl City, 3,114 to 3,099 in the semifinals.

"Hopefully, we can win states," said Mililani's Kyle Kageno, who was runner-up in the individual championship with 1,356 pins.

For Pearl City's Pirtle, it was his second title in three years. The senior finished second last year.

"Sometimes, you have to lose to get better," said Pirtle, who bowls regularly at Naval Station Bowl.

"Every place plays different," he said. "You just have to adjust."

Pirtle, who averaged 210 during the regular season, tallied 1,451 pins, including the highest boys' individual game of the day at 289.

Kapolei's Roller, a junior, made a dramatic jump from last year, when she placed 15th, or just high enough to medal. She felt out of her element because she bowls at Barbers Point Bowling Center.

"I didn't think I'd do as good as I did," she said. "The girls I was up against, this is their house."

Roller's 1,245 edged Pearl City's Jordeen Kozumi's 1,241.

Defending state champion Dara Ajimine of Kalani was third at 1,151.

The state tournament is Thursday and Friday in Hilo.
