WAIPAHU—Swingers, Texas Rangers.

Not a new television series. Just a pair of prospects of the American League club who batted the West Oahu CaneFires to a 6-4 win against the Honolulu Sharks yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

Chad Tracy and Ian Gac each homered and doubled to help the CaneFires (6-12) take the rubber game of the three-game series from the Sharks (10-8).

"Things have been going pretty well right now because we had been struggling," said Gac, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound right-handed hitting first baseman. "Everybody was hitting today and that was good."

The game was mutually agreed upon by the teams for seven innings because of pitching issues.

West Oahu starter Keisaku Itokazu (2-0) pitched six innings, giving up two runs, six hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

But Garrett White made it interesting in the seventh, when he got only two outs while walking five, allowing two runs to score, as the Sharks pulled to 6-4. White was lifted with the bases loaded for Hawai'i's own Reid Santos, a Castle High graduate. Santos retired Kyler Burke on a pop to second to end the game for his first save.

Tracy's solo shot to left with one out in the third broke a 1-1 tie. It was his fourth homer of the season, pulling him into a three-way tie for the league lead with North Shore's Mat Gamel and Jeramy Laster.

"It feels good to help out and start winning some games," said Tracy, a 6-3, 205-pound right-handed hitter listed as a catcher, but who started in left field yesterday. "I'm seeing (the ball) good and I'm trying to take advantage of it as much as I can."

One out later in the third, Gac's solo shot, also to left, made it 3-1. His third homer of the season pulled him into a tie for second in the league.

"It was a 3-2 fastball, middle-in," Gac said. "The guy kind of fell behind the count. I fouled off some pitches and he had to come back with something over the plate, so I knew that. It was fastball in and I was lucky to get the bat out front."

Jimmy James (1-1) allowed three runs, including the homers to Gac and Tracy, in four innings. Katsuyuki Aihara didn't fare any better, also giving up three runs in the fifth, including a lead-off double to left by Tracy, who then scored on Joshua Bell's double down the right-field line. Jamie Hoffman singled home Bell and later scored on a passed ball that made it 6-1.

The CaneFires struck first when Gac led off the second with a double, took second when Hoffman grounded out to second and scored on K.C. Herren's single.

The Sharks tied it in the bottom of the second. Jason Place walked with two outs, took second on a wild pitch by Itokazu, and scored on Takumi Kobe's double down the left-field line.

The Sharks got a run in the sixth when Matt Wieters doubled with one out, took second when Tyler Flowers grounded out to short on a nice diving stop by Jeff Bianchi and scored on Burke's single to make it 6-2.

HONU SWEEP SERIES

Leadoff batter Michael Griffin hit two home runs and drove in three to lead North Shore over Waikiki, 9-4, yesterday at Wong Stadium in Hilo to complete a three-game series sweep.

The series marked the return of HWB to the Big Island since the Hilo Stars played there from 1993 to 1997. The Sharks and CaneFires will play in Hilo Nov. 2 to 4.

Bud Norris (1-0) gave up two runs in four innings for the Honu (13-6), while Jared Lansford (0-2) yielded seven runs (six earned) in 3 1/3 innings for the BeachBoys (8-11).

Jamie Romak also homered for North Shore. Lucas Duda homered for the BeachBoys.
