PEARL CITY — Roosevelt and Pearl City remained tied for third place in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Division, and it took an incredible fourth period last night to remain there.
Roosevelt scored 14 points in the final 4:50 to tie host Pearl City, 34-34, in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Roosevelt's kicker missed a 45-yard field goal on the game's final play.
Roosevelt and Pearl City are both 5-2-1. Kaimuki (7-0), which finishes its regular season tonight against Kalani, and Waipahu (7-1) will finish 1-2 in the standings.
Even if Kaimuki loses to Kalani, the Bulldogs beat the Marauders to gain the tie-breaker.
All four teams are in the OIA playoffs.
According to Pearl City coach Mel Bicoy, the athletic directors of both schools will have a coin toss to determine the No. 3 seed.
The winner faces Waipahu. The loser plays Kaimuki.
Pearl City appeared to put things away after Jared Cudiamat's 10-yard touchdown run and Kawika Borden's 1-yard touchdown plunge, which made it 34-20 with 8:50 remaining in the game.
"Emotional highs and lows," Bicoy said. "We let it slip away from us. Of course our student-athletes are disappointed."
Roosevelt's Lowen Kahooilihala hit Alex Fowler with a 23-yard pass to make it 34-26 with 4:50 remaining.
After a Chargers' three-and-out, Kahooilihala hooked up with Justin Otaguro on a 14-yard scoring strike to make it 34-32 with 1:56 left. Kahooilihala's 2-point conversion pass to Ranson Tuitama tied it up.
The Rough Riders attempted a pooch kickoff and Roosevelt's Travis Higa recovered at the 19.
A 16-yard completion to Otaguro put the ball at the 3, but on the next play the center-quarterback exchange wasn't pure and Pearl City's Keala Spencer recovered the fumble.
"It was a miscommunication between me and my linemen," Kahooilihala said. "The count was different because I changed out of the play."
Added Roosevelt coach Lester Parrilla: "To come back with a tie ... we really thought we were going to come out with a win."
Pearl City lost the ball on downs at the Roosevelt 47 on its final possession, and Roosevelt moved the ball to the 26 for a field goal with 3.2 seconds left.
Roosevelt's Kahooilihala finished 16 of 33 for 259 yards, with 198 yards coming in the second half.
"We started off slow and we had a late start so next time we just have to pick it up earlier," he said.
Tuitama had 17 carries for 110 yards.
Pearl City rushed for 205 yards.
