Rainbow Wahine blank Nevada in WAC opener

The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team was efficient early — scoring on its first two shots on goal — and it led to an easy victory last night over Nevada.
Ambree Ako scored at 13:42 and Taryn Fukuroku added another at 15:23 as Hawai'i beat Nevada, 3-0, in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Fukuroku made it 3-0 at 83:40 on assists from Ako and Kristen Oshiro.
"I thought they played exceedingly well today; lots of energy," said Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing. "They didn't give the other team an opportunity to play."
A crowd of 917 at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium saw Hawai'i (8-3-2) tie school records with its sixth consecutive home victory and by extending its home unbeaten streak to nine matches (8-0-1).
"On our home field, our grass and everything ... going on the road, the air, the cold, everything just affects us," Fukuroku said.
On the first goal, Koren Takeyama sent a ball into the penalty box from the right side and the Wolf Pack defenders were unable to clear. Ako settled the ball and put a shot into the left side of the net from point-blank range.
Hawai'i scored again on its next shot when a corner kick from the right side by Nicole Mikula was punched away off the goal line by Nevada goalie Marie Cove. The ball went right to Fukuroku, who knocked it into the net.
"Mikula just made a nice cross and I think it deflected off of someone's head on the other team," Fukuroku said. "It was in the 6 (-yard box) and I just knocked it in."
Hawai'i junior goalie Kori Lu set a school record with her 11th career solo shutout.
"I thought Kori didn't have a significant amount to do," Tenzing said.
That's because Hawai'i defender Tehane Higa played a solid match, helping hold Nevada (4-6-1) to just seven shots, one of which was on goal. Higa missed four consecutive matches before returning in the Rainbow Wahine's previous match Oct. 7 against Pepperdine.
"I thought Tehane was big-time controlling the entire defensive line," Tenzing said. "I am truly happy to see her back because we miss her sorely."
Hawai'i controlled the tempo and most of the play was on its side of the field. The Rainbow Wahine also had a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.
"Overall, it wasn't a good team performance by us," Nevada assistant coach Graeme Abel said. "Give Hawai'i credit, they came out and looked great. They were clearly the better team tonight."
Hawai'i could've had more, but missed numerous scoring opportunities, including two shots off the post.
"My concern is they're missing too many goals," Tenzing said. "When push comes to shove, we'll be able to get some more goals."
Fukuroku leads the Rainbow Wahine with seven goals this season, while Ako is second with six.
"It doesn't really matter as long as we win," Fukuroku said.
Hawai'i will host a WAC match against Fresno State tomorrow at 5 p.m.
