BeachBoys rally past Honu, 7-6

Jeff Kindel's three-run home run capped a four-run top of the ninth as the Waikiki BeachBoys rallied past the North Shore Honu, 7-6, yesterday in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Hans L'Orange Park.

Ronald Hill (1-1) yielded all four runs for the Honu (6-3).

Emmanuel Garcia led off ninth for the BeachBoys (6-3) with a double to left and scored on former Hawai'i Rainbow Matt Inouye's double to left. After a walk, sacrifice fly and strikeout, Kindel homered to right.

In a night game, the Honolulu Sharks and West Oahu CaneFires played to a 5-5 tie in a game halted by league rule after the maximum allowable 11 innings.

Brandon Snyder had four hits and two RBIs for the Sharks (3-5-1). Anthony Hatch had four hits and an RBI for the CaneFires (2-6-1).

SOCCER

HILO WOMEN WIN, 2-0

Jani Carmona and Megan Pachecano scored goals as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated host Notre Dame de Namur, 2-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's match at Belmont, Calif.

Hilo is 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the PacWest. Notre Dame de Namur is 3-8-1 and 2-4.

Also in the PacWest yesterday:

  • Andres Caballero scored two goals as Notre Dame de Namur (5-7-1, 2-3) beat Hawai'i-Hilo (5-6, 2-2), 4-0, in a physical men's match at Belmont, Calif. Forty-eight fouls were called and seven yellow cards were issued.

  • Mikala Wilkes scored four goals as Dixie State (9-3-1, 3-1-1) defeated Hawai'i Pacific (2-8, 1-3), 5-0, in a women's match at St. George, Utah.


    SURFING

    ABUBO ADVANCES

    Hawai'i surfer Megan Abubo advanced to the third round of the NAB Beachley Classic yesterday at Manly Beach, Sydney, Australia.

    Abubo placed second in her second-round heat, but the top two from each heat advanced.

    Fellow Hawai'i surfers Melanie Bartels and Leilani Gryde advanced to the third round earlier in the week.

    The contest is the fifth of eight stops on the 2007 World Championship Tour for women.


    VOLLEYBALL

    HILO TOPS DOMINICAN

    Fabiane Seben had 12 kills, Hillary Hurley 11 and Kauwila Lavea 10 as Hawai'i-Hilo (14-5) defeated Dominican (7-6), 30-26, 30-19, 30-22, last night in a non-conference match at UH-Hilo gym.
