Sometimes luck is the ultimate trump card.
Take Cheryl Kamiya of 'Ewa Beach. She's an occasional player of Pigskin Picks, usually submits just one ballot, picks the winners at random, even resorting to selecting teams by the color of their uniforms.
Well, Kamiya, a warehouse manager at Hickam, relied on all skills — and even got the luck of the draw — to win Week 6 of the Pigskin Picks contest. Kamiya correctly picked the winners of 14 of the 15 games (she got the USC-Stanford game wrong). Her ballot was selected at random from the many 14-1 ballots. She wins a trip for two to Las Vegas and $500.
"I go by name," she said. "If I'm torn between names, I go with the color of the uniform, or just pick whatevers."
Kamiya said her husband (Gordon) of 18 years plays just about every week and she just decided to play.
When he saw that she had picked winless and heretofore hapless Notre Dame over UCLA, he said, "Why'd you pick that one? 'I don't know,' " she said.
"I don't even remember who I picked (on the rest of the ballot)," she said.
When she was told by KSSK radio personality Michael W. Perry that she had won Pigskin Picks, Kamiya said you should've seen her husband's face.
But he was happy, she said, "because he knows he's going with me (to Vegas)."
