OIA will now be able to use city, county sports facilities

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association has resolved its issue with using city and county facilities for athletic practices and events, league executive director Dwight Toyama said yesterday.

Usage by public schools was temporarily in question a few weeks ago when some programs were cautioned about the facilities possibly being inaccessible due to liability concerns related to a state law passed in the spring. The law, referred to as "Act 152," places full liability on the state when it uses a county facility.

It affects several sports, including baseball and swimming, and Toyama was forced to add coverage to the OIA's existing insurance policy. While Toyama said the league did not incur added premiums, it does have to submit a list of every practice and game time at city and county facilities for the rest of the school year.

Big Island Interscholastic Federation executive director Ken Yamase said his league has secured the necessary coverage, as has the Maui Interscholastic League. He added the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation still is working toward a solution.
