HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are looking for a Ka'u man who is a "person of interest" in connection with a home-invasion robbery in the Mountain View area of Puna on Saturday.

Officers are asking for the public's help in locating 22-year-old Darren Joao of Wai'ohinu. Police also said they now believe the robbers targeted that specific house, and that the home invasion was not random.

Police said patrol officers were sent to a home on Road 5 in the Hawaiian Acres subdivision early Saturday evening after receiving a report that a group of men entered a home where three men and girl were living.

The victims reported that between three and five males, two of whom brandished firearms, demanded specific property from them. One of the robbers wore a mask, police were told.

When the victims were unable to produce the property, the robbers forced them out of the home and into one of the victim's vehicles.

One of the robbers drove through the subdivision for a short time in the victim's vehicle with the remaining robbers following in their vehicle, and at one point the female minor was removed from the vehicle.

The vehicle driven by one of the robbers continued on with the three male victims still in the vehicle.

The minor reported to police that at that point she was sexually assaulted by one of the remaining robbers. The male victims were also later released from the vehicle.

The robbers were last seen leaving in a truck in addition to the stolen vehicle, which is described as a white 2000 Chevrolet four-door sedan bearing Hawai'i veteran's license plates numbered F317. The robbers are described as men in their 20s or 30s with tanned complexions. The female minor was transported by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

None of the remaining victims required immediate medical attention.
