The 75 McDonald's restaurants in Hawai'i hope to raise more than $50,000 tomorrow as part of the company's 6th Annual World Children's Day.
The event is McDonald's largest annual fundraiser for children and families in need, with proceeds from local activities going to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii.
For 20 years, the Ronald McDonald House has been serving as a "home away from home" for Neighbor Islanders and Pacific islanders who must travel to Honolulu to get medical treatment for seriously ill children. The agency serves about 500 families at its two Ronald McDonald Houses — the O'ahu Avenue House and the Judd Hillside House — with 7,000 visitors annually at the RMH Family Room at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children.
McDonald's patrons can participate in World Children's Day in several ways.
For each breakfast Extra Value Meal, beef or premium chicken Extra Value Meal and 10-piece McNugget Extra Value Meal sold, the company will donate $1 to Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Customers also may donate $1 for the "Give a Hand" in-restaurant program that will allow them to write their names on paper hands to be posted in the restaurant.
McDonald's also has joined with The Honolulu Advertiser to produce a special edition for tomorrow's World Children's Day that will be offered in restaurants statewide by celebrity volunteers for a $1 donation.
Mayor Mufi Hannemann will appear at McDonald's of Pearl Kai from 8 to 8:30 a.m.; and Jordan Segundo and Yasmin Dar of Destination: Groove Dance Hawaii will be at McDonald's of Palolo from 7 to 9 a.m.
At the McDonald's of Makiki, Manolo Morales, of KHON, will appear from 6 to 8 a.m., and Grace Lee and Steve Uyehara, of KGMB, from 9 to 10 a.m.
Howard Dashefsky and Stephanie Lum, of KHNL, will be at McDonald's of Nimitz from 2 to 3 p.m.; with Jill Kuramoto and Rob Demello, of KITV, at McDonald's of Ke'eaumoku from 5 to 7 a.m. At McDonald's of Kahala, Miss Hawai'i 2007, Ashley Layfield, will appear from 7 to 9 a.m.
Since the inaugural World Children's Day in 2002, McDonald's and its patrons around the world have raised more than $100 million to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities and other children's causes. Locally, McDonald's Restaurants of Hawaii has raised more than $205,000.
