Rally ends 'Shelter the People' walk today

Advertiser Staff

A 10-day charity walk around the island to raise awareness about homelessness will finish up at the state Capitol today with a rally.

"Walk the Talk — Shelter the People", a 130-mile walk around O'ahu, kicked off Nov. 7 from the Capitol.

The walk raises money for homeless programs, including a plan to convert buses into shelters for the homeless, and also gets the word out about the growing need for affordable housing in the Islands.

Beyond the walking, in which participants cover about 13 miles a day, each leg of the event features a community meeting at night. The gathering is meant to get people talking about homelessness and how they can help.

The last day of the walk starts in Waipahu.

Participants will walk about 13 miles to the state Capitol, arriving about 4:30 p.m. The final mile of the event will start at Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, at Bishop and Beretania streets.

The rally will follow the conclusion of the walk. For more information on the walk, go to www.walkthetalkhawaii.org.
