More upgrades at youth prison

Advertiser Staff

The Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility is getting new electronic door locks and surveillance systems as part of $2.6 million in improvements and repairs during the coming year.

The state yesterday announced that Gov. Linda Lingle has released $800,000 for health, safety and security projects at the youth prison. That money is in addition to $1,845,000 that was released last year.

The projects will help the facility comply with a memorandum of agreement signed in February 2006 between the U.S. Department of Justice and the state.

The installation of additional security cameras and electronic door locks is scheduled to be completed in March 2008. The balance of work, including roof and plumbing repairs, is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2009.
