Colorado's Dizon on defensive award list

University of Colorado linebacker and former Waimea High star Jordan Dizon has been named one of the 15 semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award for the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.
Dizon, who also was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Butkus Award, joins such stars as LSU lineman Glenn Dorsey, USC tackle Sedrick Ellis and Ohio State linebacker James Laurinatis.
The announcement of the winner will be made during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show Dec. 6 on ESPN.
Three finalists for the award will be in attendance for the ESPN broadcast.

LAJOLA WINS SINGLES OPENER IN FUTURES
Hawai'i's Dennis Lajola and Sascha Heinemann, good friends and prospective teammates at the University of Hawai'i, both won their opening-round matches at the $15,000 Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Futures yesterday on the Big Island.
Lajola, 18, from 'Aiea, is hoping to attend UH in January. He defeated American Danny Bryan, 6-4, 6-1, yesterday to advance to the second round and earn world ranking points.
Heinemann, a junior at UH who is 50th in the preseason ranking, beat American Jeremiah Fuller 6-3 in the first set and was ahead 4-1 in the second when Fuller retired.
Hawai'i's Ikaika Jobe and Brad Lum-Tucker lost a marathon second-round doubles match, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 11-9, to Americans Lester Cook and Shane La Porte.
Honolulu's Chris Lam, seeded seventh, plays La Porte at 10 a.m. today in singles on the Stadium Court. That match will be followed by Lajola facing fifth-ranked Chris Wettengel. Heinemann also plays the second match of the day, on Court 3.

WARRIORS FINISH 17TH AT TURTLE BAY TOURNEY
The University of Hawai'i men's team ended its fall season with a 17th-place finish in the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational yesterday.
UH shot a final-round 290 for a 860 total in the 21-team field. Tennessee won with a 261—800. UC Irvine was second at 271—821, followed by Texas-Arlington (272—823), with Saint Mary's (275—829), UNLV (275—829) and College of Charleston (271—829) sharing fourth.
Tennessee's Charles Ford (6-under 66) and Irvine's Sean Shahi (68) tied for top individual honors at 16-under 200.
Robert Berton was UH's top finisher at 69—208 for 21st place.
