Four Hawai'i tennis teams off to nationals

Four Hawai'i tennis teams qualified for the USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championships last weekend at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Get a Grip (3.0, 14 year olds), K2TENS (3.0, 18), Slamming Acers (open, 14) and Slamming Acers 2 (open, 18) won sectional champ-ionships on Saturday and Sunday and will compete in Tucson, Ariz., in October.

A total of 46 teams, ages 8 to 18, participated in the sec-tional championships.

THE RESULTS (SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD WINNERS IN PARENTHESES):

2.5 DIVISION

12-under: 1, Team Kailua; 2, Kilauea Storm; 3, Waialae Country Club Slicers; 4, Ihilani Slammers (Casey Tabion); 5, Punahou Gold; 6, Kauai Hurricanz.

14-under: 1, Kilauea Junior Tennis; 2, Punahou; 3, Bob's Mob; 4, Kauai Hurricanz (Ridge Floria).

18-under: 1, Mililani 10-s Kidz; (Arielle Tolentino); 2, Slamming Acers.

3.0 DIVISION

12-under: 1, K2TENS; 2, Marine Corps Tennis Academy (Bailey Thibault); 3, Team Kailua; 4, Kauai Hurricanz.

14-under: 1, Get A Grip; 2, Mililani 10-s Kidz; 3, Marine Corps Tennis Academy; 4, Tacub's Samurai's; 5, Kilauea Crush; 6, Keehi Rackets Blue (Kylee Kunimura); 7, Keauhou Menehunes.

18-under: 1, KTENS; 2, Keehi Rackets Green; 3, Mililani Tennis Club (Kaylee Yamamoto); 4, Punahou; 5, Mililani 10-s Kidz; 6, Kona Island Slicers.

3.5 DIVISION

14-under: 1, Tacub's Samurai's; 2, Team Kailua (Aleina Tanabe).

OPEN DIVISION

14-under: 1, Slamming Acers (Andrea Baysa); 2, All Da Wei Kids.

18-under: 1, Slamming Acers 2; 2, Leilehua; 3, Waialae Iki Gold Stars; 4, Bob's Mob 1 (Karlene Pang).

GYMNASTICS

FROWEIN WINS TWO MEDALS AT NATIONALS

A team of Hawai'i female gymnasts won five medals at the Western Junior Olympic National Championship, May 11-13 at Spokane, Wash.

Punahou seventh-grader Jenna Frowein of Hawaiian Island Twisters led the way for the level 9 gymnasts, winning an eighth-place all-around medal with a 37.025 score in the junior B division. She also earned a ninth-place medal (9.325) on the balance beam event. Twisters' team-mate Andrea Prohaska tied for ninth on the balance beam (9.325).

In the junior A division, Leiohu Burnett, of Maui Elite Gym, won the 10th-place medal, earning a 9.325 on the balance beam. Maui Elite teammate Sarah Guerrero also earned a 10th-place medal in the junior D division with her 9.40 on the balance beam.
