A 38-year-old man riding a motorcycle was critically injured in a traffic accident yesterday morning in the Campbell Industrial Park area, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for Honolulu Emergency Services.

The motorcycle reportedly collided with a tractor-trailer rig about 7:55 a.m. in the area fronting 94-240 Komohana St.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet, Cheplic said.

MAN CHARGED IN NET ENTICEMENT

Prosecutors yesterday charged a 23-year-old man with first-degree electronic enticement of a child.

Ivan Y. Sakata, of Mo'ili'ili, is accused of arranging in an online chat room to meet for sex with whom he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.

A Honolulu police detective assigned to the Hawai'i Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force was posing as the teenage girl. Authorities were waiting for Sakata when he showed up Tuesday to pick up the girl at Kahala Mall, police said.

CHARITY GROUP GETS $2 MILLION

Mayor Mufi Hannemann yesterday handed Catholic Charities Hawai'i a $2 million check in a ceremony in Makiki. The money will go toward the acquisition of the nonprofit's new home.

The money came from a federal grant program, which aims to improve communities.

The community block development grant program is administered by the city.

The funds will go toward the purchase of Catholic Charities' new headquarters at the corner of Ke'eaumoku and Nehoa streets — the former First Presbyterian Church.

The site cost $15 million and will undergo interior renovations.

MAN FOUND OFF HALE'IWA DIES

A man found floating face down in the water yesterday at Police Beach in Hale'iwa was pronounced dead by Emergency Medical Services personnel at 2:08 p.m.

The man is believed to be 38 years old. The medical examiner's office was trying to confirm his identity.

Police have classified the case as an unattended death.

ARSON SUSPECTED IN MAUI HIGH FIRE

KAHULUI, Maui — Arson is suspected in a fire that caused $75,000 damage to a classroom at Maui High School.

A resident near the Lono Avenue campus reported smelling smoke in the neighborhood at 10:36 p.m. Tuesday. Three fire engine companies and a tanker responded to the alarm and located the fire shortly after 11 p.m. Firefighters had the blaze under control within 20 minutes.

OFFICER SHOOTS DOG IN KANE'OHE

Police Internal Affairs was investigating an officer's shooting of a dog yesterday at Ko Place, a cul de sac in Kane'ohe.

According to neighbors, the mixed-breed dog that was shot was among a group that had gotten loose about 3:30 p.m.

The dogs threatened a woman, who suffered minor injuries. Police were called and the dog was shot when it made a threatening move toward an officer. The dog was taken to an animal hospital.

A family member had just returned home with the dogs to wash them when they got away.
