Honoka'a senior Sean Maekawa and Kamehameha junior TJ Kua share the lead after yesterday's first round of the HHSAA/David S. Ishii Foundation Boys State Golf Championships.
Maekawa and Kua, Ishii's nephew from Lihu'e, shot 5-under-par 67s at the Waikoloa Kings' course on the Big Island. Maekawa, the first four-time Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, finished second last year; Kua shared second two years ago.
Maryknoll sophomore Alex Chu, who was second in the Hickam Invitational Sunday, is a shot back. Kamehameha-Hawai'i's Pono Calip, Maui's Sean Saito and Pearl City's Michael Jay Sato share fourth at 70.
Punahou (290) is a shot ahead of Kamehameha and 11 up on Maryknoll in the team standings. Punahou, which won its first girls championship last week, has not won a boys title since winning in 1995, '96 and '97. Kamehameha won in 2002.
The final round is today.
