How to honor moms the rest of the year

It hardly seems fair.
Of the 364 days of the year that moms spend caring for others, there's a mere one day devoted to them: May 13.
The lifelong work of a mom can never totally be matched, but there is a way to honor them in a more meaningful, thoughtful way than the traditional card and flowers.
Good moms are often described as being nurturing, supportive, encouraging and compassionate. These are qualities that all of us can use daily to make our communities better. From volunteer work in non-profit organizations, to serving as mentor to an under-privleged child, to devoting time at a nearby school — these are all worthy acts that exemplify the best in what moms have to offer.
One shining example of volunteerism is Leeward teacher Linda Uehara of Mililani, who was recently awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award at the White House. For 40 years, she has worked to help Hawai'i youth, families schools and communities. No doubt, her time and devotion helped the lives of many.
A nice card and a beautiful bouquet of flowers are great for May 13. But why not honor mothers every day by using all the traits that make them so worthy of emulation?
That's enough to make any mother proud.
