Radford came together in the second half to advance to the title game.
Bui Baravilala came off the bench to score 12 points and Brittini Fuller added eight points and had a stellar defensive game as the Rams defeated Kalani, 39-38, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division tournament semifinal at McKinley last night.
Radford (13-1), the top seed out of the West, will face Roosevelt, which defeated Farrington, 29-18, tomorrow night at McKinley.
"We just needed to play team ball and look for each other a little bit more," Radford coach David Lane said. "We cut down the turnovers and the reason why we were turning the ball over (in the first half) was because we weren't looking for each other. Everybody was trying to score on their own."
Radford slowly chipped away at a 22-16 halftime deficit with patience in its offense. Baravilala's layup with 2 minutes left in the third quarter gave Radford a 25-24 lead, its first lead since the game's opening basket.
The Rams held Kalani (11-3) to just three points — all from the free-throw line — as Kalani's fast pace in the first half came to a halt. The 5-foot-4 Fuller held Courtney Gaddis, who had a seven-inch height advantage, scoreless in the third.
"She's a really good player," Fuller said. "I've seen her play before and my coaches warned me about her. I just had to keep her out of the paint and try to take her out. She's way taller than me so I tried to give her room so she wouldn't post me up."
Radford led 39-32 with 2:11 left in the fourth after Ta Nitra Byrd's three-point play, and then withstood a late rally by the Falcons.
Gaddis scored the next six points to cut the deficit to 39-38 with 42 seconds remaining. After she missed a free throw, Kalani got the ball back, but Megan Kamehiro and Gaddis missed 3-point attempts.
Baravilala came up with the ball and was fouled in the corner with 3 seconds remaining. After a timeout, she missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but rebounded her miss and got away from several Kalani players before time expired.
"We had two good looks at it," Kalani coach Darold Imanaka said. "We just couldn't finish. I'm OK with it."
The Falcons were done in by poor shooting from the floor and free-throw line in the second half. Kalani finished the game 10 of 25 from the free-throw line and had its lowest point total of the season.
"We didn't shoot the ball well," Imanaka said. "It's just not our night. You can't do anything about that. The kids played as hard as they could. I'm proud of them."
Kalani led 13-7 after the first quarter and by as much as 11 in the second with its fast tempo and press that hardly gave the Rams good looks at the basket.
But Radford had Byrd, a 6-foot freshman forward, bring the ball up the court to help break the press.
"We feel everybody on the team has to be able to handle the ball," Lane said. "As a freshman, she's already one of the better ball handlers on the team. She just happens to play forward because she's the tallest player we have."
Byrd credited her team for coming together when it counted the most.
"She (Baravilala) stepped up, all the girls stepped up," said Byrd, who finished with nine points. "We hit big shots. We did everything we could."
