Pets on the go: Traveling pet owners who just can't bear to be parted from their small dogs or even cats may check in at The Kahala Resort and a few other Island destinations.
The Kahala charges $150 per pet and offers dog-walking, pet pillows and a card that guests can use to teach their dogs commands in Hawaiian. The Sheraton Princess Kaiulani in Waikiki and Four Seasons Resort Maui also allow small pets, as do several B&Bs, vacation homes and Harbor Shores Apartment Hotel in 'Aiea. At W Honolulu in Diamond Head, cats and dogs under 40 pounds are welcome. Owners pay an extra $25 a day at the W plus a $100 cleaning fee.
Riding the trail: Parker Ranch, Cowboys of Hawai'i at Parker Ranch, and Paniolo Preservation Society's Waiomina Centennial present the Parker Ranch 160th Anniversary Historic Trail Ride and Barbecue June 17.
The Father's Day ride will begin at Pukalani Stables at 9 a.m., pass the Pu'uhihale home corral to Pu'u Holoholoku and return to the stables around 1 p.m. Trail guide Corky Bryan of Parker Ranch and guides Alex Penovaroff, Allan Mendes and Dr. Billy Bergin will share history of the area. Wranglers from Cowboys of Hawai'i at Parker Ranch will lead riders and trail guides with stops along the way to "talk story" about the area. Drinks and snacks will be provided at the turnaround. Back at the stable, riders enjoy an old-style wrangler's barbecue and soft drinks.
Cost is $35 for riders with their own horses (no stallions, please); riders may also rent horses (first-come basis) for $75. Non-riders are welcome to join the barbecue lunch for $30. Reservations required: (808) 885-1904 by June 1. www.parkerranch.com.
An endless escape: The Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa Endless Escape room rate is $179; its Sunrise to Sunset package with breakfast and afternoon mai-tai starts at $209 and its Free Wheelin' special includes room and rental car starting at $226.
