HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island Mayor Harry Kim remained hospitalized in Honolulu yesterday after he was diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia after returning from a trip to Asia.

Kim was suffering from severe chills and a high fever on a flight home from Indonesia, and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center Sunday when his flight landed, according to a statement from the county.

Kim was initially kept in isolation to rule out the possibility of any contagious condition. He was later released from isolation, but remained at Queen's after doctors found the pneumonia in one lung.

"His spirits are good, and this is a guy who has all kinds of resilience," said county public relations specialist Janet Snyder.

Kim left Hawai'i on March 19 to participate in a disaster-preparedness workshop at the request of the Indonesian government.
